In today’s class we were learning the importance of storytelling, why we should use it to show off your work and how to deliver a good story. First things first why bother make a story? In class we were given plenty of examples of a products that are given a story to showcase their audience or the users that they were aiming for. One example stuck with me was the innocent smoothie story.

This picture was shown on the lecture slides in class and it shows us that these drinks are aimed more towards children rather then adults given the wacky hats put on each of the drinks. At first glance it was just another advertising stunt in my eyes but after finding a very similar picture it showed me that these small details that make the drink have a story and a meaning behind it was a clever way of advertising there product as it makes people like me interested as to why the hats why put them on and who is it for.

As you can see the difference in the two pictures is massive one shows the innocence of children and how playful that they can be and the second one is just another drink we can find in any store. For me personally I would be more inclined to give a second look at the first one to find a reasoning behind it.
Going Forward with storytelling!
Using the knowledge I gained from finding the small finer details to make a product stand out is very useful going forward as in each presentation that we have to do during our time in product design we are really only trying to deliver a product in the best story to make the product jump off the wall to really interest you. It is extremely important to grab the user’s attention and get them invested into a story to show them why they need this product. The storytelling aspect of design is one of the most important yet one that doesn’t attract as much attention as it should. Going forward I will try to highlight my audience and showcase the features in a story that really gets people interested in what you have to say. Making the user want to engage and become familiar with what ever you are trying to sell to them.
Storytelling is an art and should be noticed more as an art.
